November 2009 Recall – Accelerator Pedal/Floor Mat Entrapment

More than eight million vehicles have been recalled by Toyota Motor Corp. in 2009 and 2010 due to "unintended acceleration" and "sudden acceleration" problems resulting from defective gas pedals and floor mats. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it has received reports of 34 deaths caused by sudden acceleration incidents, although not all of these reports have been verified. Toyota initially recalled 3.8 million vehicles for an issue with the floor mat becoming "entrapped" with the accelerator pedal in November 2009:

  1. Toyota Avalon – 2005 to 2010
  2. Toyota Camry – 2007 to 2010
  3. Toyota Prius – 2004 to 2009
  4. Toyota Tacoma – 2005 to 2010
  5. Toyota Tundra – 2007 to 2010
  6. Lexus ES 350 – 2007 to 2010
  7. Lexus IS 250 – 2006 to 2010
  8. Lexus IS 350 – 2006 to 2010.

On January 27, 2010, Toyota announced it was adding the following vehicles to the November recall:

  1. 2008 to 2010 Toyota Highlander
  2. 2009 to 2010 Toyota Corolla
  3. 2009 to 2010 Toyota Venza
  4. 2009 to 2010 Toyota Matrix
  5. 2009 to 2010 Pontiac Vibe.

January 2010 – Sticking Accelerator Recall

Toyota announced a recall of approximately 2.3 million vehicles, due to a separate issue of the accelerator pedal "sticking" in January 2010:

  1. Toyota Rav4 - 2009 to 2010
  2. Toyota Corolla - 2009 to 2010
  3. Toyota Matrix - 2009 to 2010
  4. Toyota Avalon - 2005 to 2010
  5. Toyota Camry - 2007 to 2010
  6. Toyota Highlander -  2010 (excluding Hybrid models)
  7. Toyota Tundra - 2007 to 2010
  8. Toyota Sequoia - 2008 to 2010.
