Mesothelioma Lawsuit Attorneys

Every year, around 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, are diagnosed in the United States. Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that is almost always associated with exposure to asbestos. The majority of people who develop mesothelioma have inhaled asbestos fibers or asbestos dust particles on the job. Secondhand exposure is also possible, and family members and others that have lived with workers exposed to asbestos have also developed mesothelioma. Some research has suggested asbestos may cause other illnesses as well. Asbestos exposure may also cause other life-threatening cancers, including laryngeal cancer, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, and breast cancer.

How Does Asbestos Cause Mesothelioma?

When asbestos fibers are inhaled, the fibers may cause inflammation and irritation to the surrounding lung tissue. This leads to the eventual production of chemical substances called cytokines, which cause changes to the cells of the lung and mesothelium, the membrane that forms the lining of pleura, peritoneum and pericardium. Eventually these cells become malignant. Mesothelioma can develop in the outer lining of the lung (the pleura) or in the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) and in the sac that surrounds the heart (the pericardium).  The cancer is often is often not diagnosed until the later stages of the disease, because of the long latency period of the disease. After diagnosis, the average survival time is between 12 to 18 months.

Mesothelioma Symptoms and Diagnosis

Mesothelioma is unique because symptoms may not appear for years or decades after exposure. Common initial symptoms of pleural mesothelioma  (the most common type of mesothelioma that develops in the outer lining of the lung) include shortness of breath, coughing and pain in the chest wall. Other symptoms include:

  1. Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
  2. Difficulty in swallowing (dysphagia)
  3. Fatigue
  4. Night sweats
  5. Persistent dry, raspy cough with little or no phlegm
  6. Persistent pain in the chest or rib area, or painful breathing
  7. Shortness of breath, even when at rest
  8. Appearance of lumps under the skin on the chest
  9. Unexplained weight loss.

Diagnosis may be made with a CT scan and chest X-ray, and confirmed with a biopsy.

Mesothelioma Treatment

A mesothelioma diagnosis can be distressing and frightening. However, you should not give up hope, and you should take swift action to protect your rights. Start by contacting an attorney who can help you get the financial compensation you deserve. Compensation for a mesothelioma claim can include money for treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, long-term care costs, and other medical costs associated with diseases related to asbestos exposure. Because of the latency period of the disease, so many patients are already retired when a diagnosis is made. It is important to not delay getting medical treatment. Contacting an attorney promptly can ensure you secure the funds necessary for medical treatment quickly. You may also be eligible for financial help before your case is settled.

Asbestos Claims and Lawsuits

Hundreds of thousands of lawsuits have been filed against companies that used to manufacture and distribute asbestos products and other companies that allowed employees to keep working once asbestos was a known carcinogen. If you've been diagnosed with mesothelioma, lung cancer or another asbestos-related disease such as asbestosis, a chronic inflammatory medical condition affecting the parenchymal tissue of the lungs, an asbestos lawyer can help seek compensation for your illness and ensure you receive the medical treatment you need. To find out more about your rights and the availability of financial compensation for you or a loved one, contact Estey & Bomberger for a no-obligation assessment or your potential claim.
