Hydroxycut Lawsuit AttorneysThe weight loss supplement Hydroxycut has been linked to liver failure and other related liver problems, including elevated liver enzymes, liver damage, liver transplant, seizures, rhabdomyolysis, and death. Before being recalled by the FDA in 2009 due to at least one death and 23 reports of serious health problems, Hydroxycut was a top-selling weight loss product, with more than one million products sold per year. Liver problems have been associated with Hydroxycut dating back to 2002. Sixty-five percent of the patients who suffered adverse events were female. About Hydroxycut Hydroxycut products are manufactured by Iovate Health Sciences, a private company based in Oakville Canada, that offers fat burners, muscle builders and other diet aids and weight loss supplements. Hydroxycut has been sold at gyms, conventional retailers, pharmacies, grocery stores, health food stores, online internet retailers and through direct television to consumer advertising. Hydroxycut products are distributed by Iovate Health Sciences USA Inc., of Blasdell, New York. May 2009 Hydroxycut Recall Citing 23 reports of "serious liver injuries" and the 2007 death of a 19-year-old man, on May 1, 2009, the FDA warned consumers to immediately stop using 14 Hydroxycut products. The recalled products included:
The recall did not include Hydroxycut Cleanse or Hoodia products. Prior to the May 1 recall, the main ingredients in Hydroxycut products were garcinia cambogia, gymnema sylvestre, chromium polynicotinate, caffeine, and green tea. Two months following the recall, Iovate put on the market a new version of Hydroxycut Advanced products, sparking criticism that 60 days was not enough time for the company to make a new version, with very few of the same main ingredients, other than caffeine. Symptoms of Hydroxycut Liver Damage According to the FDA, anyone taking the recalled Hydroxycut products could be at risk for liver damage, even if they had no other pre-existing medical conditions or risk factors for liver disease (i.e., alcohol consumption, history of viral hepatitis, HIV infection or autoimmune diseases). Liver damage symptoms from Hydroxycut may show up while the person is taking the product, or even months later. Some of the possible symptoms of liver damage include:
If you are experiencing any symptoms or adverse side effects that you believe may possibly be associated with the use of Hydroxycut, seek medical attention immediately. Consumers are also encouraged to report serious adverse events to the FDA's Medwatch Adverse Event Reporting Program by visiting their website or calling (800)FDA-1088.
