Boat Recalls & Defect Reporting

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) investigates all  consumer complaints about defects in recreational boats and related equipment.  If you suspect a part on your boat is defective, you are urged to report it to the Coast Guard's Boating Safety Division. You can visit uscgboating.org to report defects and search for recalls of parts on your boat.

Preventing Boating Accidents

Many boating accidents can be attributed to operator inexperience.  You can gain experience by taking a boating  class to increase your knowledge and boating skills. Have a safety inspection done on your vessel to ensure that all the equipment is operating properly. Keep your boat equipped with personal flotation devices (life jackets), visual distress signals (signal flares and flags), and flashlights. Fire extinguishers are required if you have an inboard engine, permanently installed fuel tanks, a double bottom hull that is not completely sealed or not completely filled with flotation materials, a closed compartment that stores portable fuel tanks, closed living space, or closed storage compartments that contain flammable materials. Keep your fire extinguisher easily accessible in the event you need it.
